IMD is pleased to announce that elea Professor of Social Innovation Vanina Farber, senior researcher Shih-Han Huang, Stephan Schmidheiny Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance Benoit Leleux, and Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship and Management Jim Pulcrano have been recognized at the 2024 EFMD Case Writing Competition.
Vanina Farber and Shih-Han Huang’s case Not so black and white: Grupo Inca’s black alpaca dilemma, co-authored with EMBA graduates Carolina Duran Silva, Baris Silahcioglu, and Hugo ten Zijthoff, won the Responsible Business category.
“This case is special not only because it helps educators tackle tough concepts in sustainability like the difference between action and impact, GenAI use in the classroom, and scenario planning for future readiness, but also because it was born from a long-standing collaboration with Grupo Inca in my program on impact investing with EMBAs in Peru,” shares Farber. “The case is co-authored with EMBA participants (now graduates) and with my dear colleague Shih Han, it reflects our shared commitment to pedagogy, innovation, and impact – and marks our second EFMD and Case Centre double win.”
Grupo Inca’s role in the decline of black alpacas is at the center of the case study, offering the students the opportunity to assess the impact of business decisions on biodiversity and sustainability. It was also celebrated at this year’s Case Centre Awards and Competitions.
In addition, Moon Creative Lab: Mitsui’s venture studio, co-authored by Benoit Leleux, Jim Pulcrano, IMD Executive MBA graduate Adam Hansson Tönning, Alexandra Loboda, Anette Papuga, and Daisuke Shinohara, won in the Continuous Improvement: The Journey to Excellence category.
“The EFMD recognition provides a superb validation for our research into corporate venturing best practices,” shares Pulcrano. Leleux added, “It is also a great recognition for Mitsui & Co itself and its innovative attempt at breeding a more entrepreneurial mindset throughout the company. With Moon Creative, Mitsui has unleashed innovation hubs to launch and learn from startups, test new business models, and expose team members to entrepreneurial ways and means.”
The authors follow the steps taken by Moon Creative Lab’s CEO, to establish the entity as a pioneering venture studio and a hub for entrepreneurial talent development within the Mitsui Group.
Last year, IMD Professor of Strategy and International Business Niccolò Pisani was the award recipient in this category at the 2023 EFMD Case Writing Competition for his case on HEINEKEN, co-authored with Inès Augier.
IMD’s faculty has been producing case studies for more than 50 years.
