Mobile chip maker Qualcomm’s mission is to deliver “intelligent computing everywhere.” It is focused on developing on-device power-efficient AI and hybrid AI, which combines on-device processing with cloud capabilities. With generative AI now available on smaller devices, such as PCs and mobile phones, Qualcomm’s strategy is to position itself as offering high-performance AI processors to enable this evolution.

Qualcomm initiated its first AI project in 2007 and since then it has continued to advance AI research to increase power efficiency and to compress and quantize AI models. A significant advancement is its Snapdragon processors, which are optimized for on-device AI processing.  In May 2024, Microsoft introduced a new category of Windows PCs namely Copilot + PCs, which run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series.  The company believes it is well-positioned to capitalize on the shift to edge AI, as generative AI evolves into smartphones, PCs, and automobiles.
