Ludo Van der Heyden

Distinguished Scholar & INSEAD Chaired Professor Emeritus in Corporate Governance

Ludo Van der Heyden became a Distinguished Scholar at IMD in September 2022, where, together with Professor Salvatore Cantale and Executive in Residence Peter Nathanial, he supports IMD’s developmental activities in the banking sector.

He has been Professor of Technology and Operations Management at INSEAD since 1988 and the INSEAD Chaired Professor in Corporate Governance since October 2010 and has been Professor Emeritus since September 2018. He was the founding Academic Director of INSEAD’s Corporate Governance Center where he co-founded the International Directors program, the Modern Governance in Banking program, and the Value Creation for Owners and Directors program. He was the first holder of the Wendel Chair for the Large Family Enterprise, which transformed into the Wendel International Centre for the Family Enterprise.

Before joining INSEAD, Van der Heyden was on the faculty at the School of Organization and Management at Yale University (1980-1988) and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (1978-80). He holds an Engineering Degree in applied mathematics from the Université Catholique de Louvain (1974) and a PhD in administrative sciences from Yale University (1979).

Van der Heyden is Chair of the board at Seisquare, a software company for estimating natural resource reserves.  He also is a member of the Advisory Board at Bencis Capital Partners and a co-founder of the Association des Plantes Aromatiques et Médicinales, which supports the restart of essential oils production in Milly-la-Forêt (near Fontainebleau).  He was a member of the Supervisory Board at Naftogaz of Ukraine (2019-2021), the largest energy company in Ukraine, where he co-created the first educational programme of the Ukrainian Corporate Governance Academy (UCGA). The King of Belgium appointed him Officer of the Order of Leopold in 1996.
