Managing a Dutch-Chinese joint venture: Where to start?

10 pages
May 2007
Reference: IMD-3-1785

After the state partly privatized Dhangtu Beer, the Dutch company Global Beverage bought a large stake in the company. Nevertheless the Chinese state still owned a considerable amount of shares and had too much influence – at least in Jan van der Werde’s opinion. He was responsible for making Dhangtu beer a successful undertaking for Global Beverage.

Learning Objective

Dealing with complicated shareholder structures as a director, avoiding conflicts of interest, pushing for turnaround and cost-cutting against the backdrop of Chinese state influence.
